Bananas in the Fridge…

It’s been over a week now. I passed them every day and quietly reminded myself that soon, they needed to be addressed. Somewhere around Friday last, the scent of ripe banana followed me as I hurried past the fruit basket. I had tried to off-load them to others, proclaiming the virtues of potassium and anything I thought might make them someone else’s problem, but by Saturday morning there was no denying the fact that they were mine.

And sometimes, we make the time to do what we know needs to be done, and sometimes, we need to wrestle with the doing of it.
There were handfuls of other things that needed my attention, and so I did what I often do when the days seem too short and I need to measure out a bit more time. It’s not a forever fix, or even an permanent alternative, it’s just an extra bit of waiting…

I put the bananas in the fridge.
Tucked safe beside the eggs, they can stay on hold for a bit longer until I can cut away the parts that shouldn’t be there, and create something wonderful with them. This morning, while  reaching for cream, (because good coffee in a great mug always requires cream) I saw the bananas and I whispered between the eggs and leftover pancakes “today is the day” It’s time. By supper time there will joy at the sight of bananas transformed!
While I’m planning the day, and sitting with the God of the universe, I think about the things in  life that mirror the bananas. The things that sit in the basket…. a bunch of anger, a few globes of fear, the resentment, anxiety, sadness, or un-forgiveness. We glance at them while we hurry through the days full of things that clamour for our attention. There is a certain scent in the air. We’ve tried to off-load them, but in the end… We know they belong to us.
And the God who walks with us in so much love… He knows what we can do, and what we’re ready to do. He waits to walk with us, to cut away the things we shouldn’t be carrying and to create something good and wonderful.  And Grace…it swirls around unending, and offers the fridge, if that’s what we need. It’s not a forever fix or a permanent alternative. Eventually over-ripe banana’s leak.
Maybe this is the day we sit with the God of the universe and when He asks, we whisper “OK, today is the day,”  He’s a most wonderful creator, restorer, and healer. He’s good with all of the overripe things in the basket or the fridge, completely trustworthy. He’s always ready for a celebration of new steps in renewal and joy!
Anyone else with bananas in the fridge?
Blessings on your day!
